2018 SWIFS SPRING SYMPOSIUM

May 15, 2018 / St. Petersburg, Florida

Featuring Keynote Speaker Susan Blount, Former General Counsel of Prudential, and Panels on Gender Gap and Social Media

SWIFS’s Spring Symposium was our best yet, full of thought-provoking discussion and networking. Our panel on the gender gap in financial services focused on the importance of successful mentoring from senior leaders and how senior lawyers can help close the gap. In an industry where women only make up 25% of all attorneys appearing in courtrooms, and even then, only 24% of the time, serve as lead counsel, this timely topic generated much conversation. In our panel on Ethical Use of Social Media, we discussed the role of Social Media during discovery in litigation, spoliation and regulatory requirements. One of our members’ favorite topics was the session on Own It by Sallie Krawcheck. We discussed the six qualities of women that make them irreplaceable at work.

A straight shooter who tells it like it is, she taught, inspired, and empowered attendees through her tried and true “Leadership Truths.” A panel, moderated by Cynthia Ferencz, discussed “Is This Thing Privileged?” Lastly, Pat Gillette, a leading expert on implicit bias, discussed the legal and scientific origins of implicit bias as well as the ways in which these biases are manifested in the everyday lives of women in business. A panel followed the presentation discussing recognizing implicit bias and offering strategies on dealing with it.
